KAUMERA from wastewater

During DDW 2018 three artist, Billie van Katwijk, Jeroen Wand en Nienke Hoogvliet, will show their products made of Kaumera from wastewater. Three different products and applications will be shown to you, for the first time. The resource Kaumera is new and unique. It is an alginate-like raw material which comes from the process of cleaning wastewater. The artists work together with the Dutch Water authorities.

De Energie- & Grondstoffenfabriek

Water authorities in the Netherlands no longer regard wastewater as merely a by-product to be treated and processed, but as a valuable source of renewable energy, raw materials, and clean water. This approach is appropriate to the wider societal transition to a circular economy. In order to contribute to this transition, the water authorities have set up a collaborative network organization called Energy & Raw Materials Factory (Energie- en Grondstoffenfabriek).

Valuable Raw Materials

Water authorities in the Netherlands no longer regard wastewater as merely a by-product to be treated and processed, but as a valuable source of renewable energy, raw materials and clean water.

This approach is appropriate to the wider societal transition to a circular economy. IN order to contribute to this transition, the water authorities have set up a collaborative network organization called Energy & Raw Materials Factory (Energie- & Grondstoffenfabriek).

The raw materials that can be recovered from wastewater include phosphate, kaumera (alginate-like), cellulose and bioplatics (PHA).
