Dutch Design Week programme complete and online

27 September 2017

The programme for the 16th Dutch Design Week (DDW) is complete and everything is now online. DDW has categorised a number of thematic developments. All the information necessary for planning a visit to the event can now be found on the ddw.nl website. DDW 2017 will take place in Eindhoven from 21 until 29 October.

Rich pickings

With more than 600 exhibitions, presentations, lectures and network meetings the event is rich in content and diversity. Apart from the regular features, a significant part of the programme has been reserved for ideas and innovations to improve the world. This ties in perfectly with the theme ‘Stretch’, an appeal – to both participants and the public – to venture out of their comfort zones and to reach for the skies.

Thematic developments

The programme management sees multiple trends this year. Hot items are the influence of digitalisation on and robotization of our society. Social issues and the circular economy also get plenty of attention and there is a special role for crafts: the rediscovery of old manufacturing methods or the development of entirely new applications for them.

New
New locations and initiatives include Core Studio (Q-Park Emmasingel), Contemplation Spaces | Room 2402 (Student Hotel), Hubot van Next Nature Network (Mediamarkt), VPRO Medialab (Design Perron), Modebelofte, Embassy of Robot Love and Embassy of Data (in the former V&D department store in the city centre shopping area), Embassy of Health (Innovation Powerhouse on Strijp T), Plan B (exhibition Kiki & Joost), Crédit Fontýs in Wall Street (Stadhuisplein) and the exhibition Young Collectors (Woensel-West). In addition, the World Design Event and a total of three ambassadors are new developments in the DDW programme.

Regular features

Annual choice features include the Design Academy Eindhoven Graduation Show, the award show of Dutch Design Awards, the presentation by Dutch Invertuals, Stimuleringsfonds and YKSI. The Van Abbemuseum, Kazerne, MU, Piet Hein Eek, Sectie-C, ABN AMRO, Textielmuseum and TAC too are organising exhibitions again this year. In the VEEM and on the Ketelhuisplein in Strijp-S there are many exhibitions, as well as in the VDMA building and the NRE terrain. The Klokgebouw (under the art directorship of Overtreders W) will also accommodate Mind the Step by Eindhoven, Delft and Twente Universities of Technology.

APPENDIX: TRENDS

Dutch Design Week spots the latest trends from the programme of events and tells you where to find them.

Robots & Mankind

The robots are coming. What can we expect? This and more will be discussed at HUBOT (Next Nature Network), Manifestations (Will The Future Design Us) and World Design Event’s Embassy of Robot Love.

Circular Design

Raw materials are increasingly scarce, while the earth is becoming more and more polluted. Many designers employ circular systems that offer solutions – including the People’s Pavilion and Dave Hakkens’ Precious Plastic.

The Immaterial Materialized

Society is digitalising. Through continuing with the development of digital concepts, their value increases for us all. MU Artspace presents Materialising The Internet and World Design Event presents Embassy of Data.

Future

World Design Event focuses our attention on eight challenges for the immediate future: food, health, urban development, (big) data, climate, intimacy, robotization, and mobility & energy.

New crafts

Old methods are given a new lease of life or are developed further, new technologies and applications are being developed at a rapid rate. Come and see for yourself at To See A World In A Grain Of Sand (Atelier NL), HOW & WOW (Crafts Council Nederland), Disobedient Bodies (Beeldenstorm/Daglicht).
