Ambassador Wendy Plomp | Curator and designer of stories

18 October 2018

Wendy Plomp by Martin Dijkstra
DDW ambassador Wendy Plomp is the embodiment of the imaginative power of design. DDW strongly believes in this driving force: after all, imagination is what helps us anticipate the future.

Wendy Plomp is founder and curator of conceptual designers’ collective Dutch Invertuals. For the last nine editions of Dutch Design Week (DDW), Plomp has furbished Dutch Invertuals’ presentation and has acquired both national and international recognition in the process. Telling a visually strong story has always been her strongest suit. Time after time, Plomp manages to connect an esthetically pleasing concept to the latest design talents. This is precisely the reason DDW chose Plomp as an ambassador. She is the embodiment of the imaginative power of design. DDW strongly believes in this driving force: after all, imagination is what helps us anticipate the future.

This year, Plomp presents another exhibition by Dutch Invertuals, at the VEEM building, named Mutant Matter. This edition connects material innovation with creative talent and broader societal debates. Where do we draw the line between the artificial and the natural? Eight designers have embarked on this question in an attempt to draw attention to the issue of the ever increasing ‘pile of waste’ brought about by mankind. What happens to obsolete materials? Are we on our way towards creating an extra geological layer of earth, which will consist solely of colourful plastics? As usual, this intriguing theme is backed by stunning visuals.

Dutch Invertuals’ second exhibition, Take Away, can be seen as commentary on current social issues based on the notion that ‘less is more.’ How might designers confront the public with the fact that our current society always seems to be hungry for ‘more’? Ten designers will look into this as a part of the exhibition. Plomp herself will pay specific attention to connecting designers with the industry and relevant organisations.

The third exhibition of Dutch Invertuals, Buitenpost, is a collaboration with Droomparken. Here Plomp presents an alternative perception of a workspace; an 'out of office' office, where nature, freedom and work are combined.

The importance of telling stories as a starting point for change has long been demonstrated by designers and curators alike. With the appointment of Plomp as DDW-ambassador, DDW intends to underline this. Design is an infinite source of inspiration; as such, designers are able to use their imaginative powers to incite critical thinking and to make way for a more sustainable future.
