ABOUT

Effenaar, Dutch Design Week and Friendly Fire are pleased to present an expanded DDW Music programme this October. Now in its third edition, the nine-day concert series continues to grow, with over 70 performances between 21–29 October, at over a dozen venues throughout Eindhoven. Moreover, the programme is getting both broader and deeper, with a new focus on the crossover between music and design. DDW Music 2017 will not only complement the design events and exhibitions but will at times transcend audio and visual media to achieve a hybrid experience.

DDW Music is an initiative by the Effenaar, Friendly Fire and Dutch Design Week and is made possible by BKKC, Exposize, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and the Gemeente Eindhoven and we give a special thank you to 3voor12/eindhoven, The Daily Indie and printing company SNEP.

LOCATIONS

This year, DDW Music looks to redefine the live music experience with a series of design collaborations: four Dutch designers have been invited to transform four different concert venues. Given free rein to reimagine these spaces, each of the studios brings a unique vision to crafting an environment for enjoying musical performances.

TIJS GILDE x Fifth | NRE
A recent graduate of the Design Academy, Tijs Gilde brings a certain childlike wonder to his design practice. This willful naïvete is balanced by a strong grasp of materials, and an eye for trends, and a nod to function.
For DDW Music 2017, Gilde applies his preternatural sensitivity to color, shape and material to the event space at the 'gasfabriek' campus on Nachtegaallaan. The former gas plant dates back to 1858 and was revitalized as Fifth | NRE in 2013. For his installation, Gilde will bedeck the stage area with a series of surfaces that play with the visual experience of space.

Studio Big Mistake x Stroomhuis
If their name is any indication, Studio Big Mistake have a sense of humor. Vincent van Dijck and Misha Gurovich specialize in innovative ways of storytelling through virtual reality, which they will bring to the Stroomhuis in full immersive force.
Long a venue for memorable DDW presentations, the unassuming building houses a DIY community space, including a gallery, performance space, workshops, and even a kitchen. Given this ‘second life’, the former power station now looks to the future as Studio Big Mistake creates a VR experience in the ‘belly of the beast’.

Joost van Bleiswijk x Effenaar
Joost van Bleiswijk first emerged onto the Dutch design some 16 years ago, with his now-iconic ‘Outlines’ and ‘No Glue No Screw’ collections. For over a decade and a half, he has explored his principle tenets of freedom and transparency in an eclectic body of work.
Effenaar, of course, needs no introduction: Since its founding in 1971, the club quickly established itself as a major music venue in the Netherlands. Van Bleiswijk will have a special place in the history of the concert hall, joining the likes of the Ramones, Joy Division, Sonic Youth and many other artists who have made Effenaar into the storied place it is today. His hard-edged punk-rock approach complements the venue while contrasting with the ultramodern architecture of MVRDV.

Elvis Wesley x de Schuilplaats
Elvis Wesley, a.k.a. Wesley de Boer, will be following up on a strong showing at last year’s Dutch Design Week, where he exhibited at the DAE Graduation Show and as a key member of the Envisions design collective. He is excited to explore this year’s DDW theme ‘Stretch’, which offers many possibilities for his his 3D software skills.
Applying his digital expertise in three dimensions, De Boer will present the project ‘Stretch Light’ at Bongo Beach, a club in Eindhoven’s Stratumseind nightlife district.
