Atelier NL has been collecting ‘wild’ sand from dunes, beaches, rivers, mountains and quarries to melt into glass since 2010. Their latest project, ‘To See a World in a Grain of Sand,’ calls upon the global community to collect and send sand samples in order to further Atelier NL’s dream of mapping the entire world in natural glass. This project re-examines glass production methods and the role of local sand as a material.
As ambassadors of DDW 2017, Atelier NL is broadening the scope of their work, which will be shown in two exhibitions. They will open up their studio in the Bergmannkerk (Hallenweg) in which the world of sand is mapped in glass. Here you can see the impressive overview of sands from all over the world, hand in your own sand samples, and learn about the process of melting sand into glass.
In the Veemgebouw (Strijp-S) you can explore the world of sand through the stories of those who contributed. By means of a film installation you can immerse yourself in personal narratives about sand from Netherlands to Australia and beyond.
On Friday 27 October Atelier NL & MU will host a symposium regarding the subject of The Abundance and Scarcity of Sand (location MU). In addition to revealing their world map, Atelier NL will release the third edition in their ZandGlas line especially made for DDW: a set of glassware sourced from the ‘Brabantse Duinen.’ Work by Atelier NL will also be on display at the following exhibitions at DDW: Dutch Design Awards (Veemgebouw), The World is my Playground (Sectie - C), New Icons (Kazerne).

Atelier NL is passionate about sharing the wonders of everyday things that normally go unnoticed. By bringing everyday people into their process, Atelier NL encourages the public to appreciate the wealth of local areas and to identify more deeply with their surroundings.
As an ambassador of DDW 2017, Atelier NL is broadening the scope of their work with this latest project. "We see this as the perfect moment to bring all of our research and experimentation into a larger project that invites the public to collaborate with us. After many years of fieldwork and working alongside farmers, geologists and scientists, we feel it is important to expand our methodology and knowledge bank.”
Their project ‘To See a World in a Grain of Sand’ is being shown in two separate locations. In addition to Atelier NL’s studio in the Bergmannkerk (Hallenweg) where the world is mapped in natural glass, visit the filminstallation op Strijp-S. (Veemgebouw).
